Just Ahead of Thanksgiving, An Oklahoma Senate Committee Looks to Increase The Turkey Population
Despite having a Tulsa mountain named after them, the turkey population in Oklahoma is declining.
Turkey Trouble: The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife says the wild turkey population is down about 30% since 2016 and continues to go down. The United States Department of Agriculture said the main reason for the decrease in population is other wildlife. Animals like skunks, raccoons, and birds prey on turkey nests.
Concerned Committee: The State Senate Tourism and Wildlife Committee spoke to experts about the turkey population decline and what to do about it. Creating safe habitat sites, keeping up with and maintaining turkey preservation zones and decreasing predators in protected areas are a few options the state Senate committee will look at.
It has been suggested that hunters be offered an incentive to trap raccoons. See the full presentation HERE.
