The Cherokee Nation is Making Big Strides to Preserve Its Native Language
The Cherokee Nation is urging for more steps to keep the Cherokee language alive, announcing its latest efforts at the First Language & Fluent Cherokee Speaker Gathering.
Start Them Young: First-language speakers are Cherokee citizens who have been speaking Cherokee since they were little kids. Many of them met Tuesday in Tahlequah to enjoy a meal and good conversation. The Durbin Feeling Language Act, is set to expire next year, but tribal leaders say they will introduce new legislation to the tribe's council by the end of the year to make the law permanent.
Sacred Language: The Cherokee Nation Language Department is committed to preserving and perpetuating the Cherokee language through day to day spoken use and by generating more proficient second-language Cherokee speakers. A hub to help make that possible is Tahlequah’s Durbin Feeling Language Center. Cherokee leaders want to expand the center by building a $30-Million Cherokee Immersion middle school.

From Los Angeles to New York City, more than 2,700 remote workers have said, “Call the movers, we are moving to Tulsa!” Tulsa Remote is a program sponsored by the George Kaiser Family Foundation that incentivizes remote workers with $10,000 for a move to T-town.
Cash, Community, Collaboration and Commitment: Those are just a few perks of Tulsa Remote’s promise. During its first year in 2019, it received 10,000 applications. Since the program's founding, it has received 50,000 applications. Applicants can take advantage of community work spaces and help with housing. Wendy Song and Ben Dowling (pictured above) say they love Tulsa’s low cost of living. They were paying $2,500 per month for a tiny L.A. apartment.
Zoomtown Economics: When knowledge workers come to town, the town succeeds. An economic impact analysis from the Economic Innovation Group found that if the program continues to grow as expected, by 2025 Tulsa Remote is poised to generate $500 million in added income in the local economy and well over 5,000 jobs locally, according to the report.
Participants must already be employed, be able to work remotely, must be 18 or older and able to move to Tulsa within 12 months. Read more about the program or apply if you are an out of towner here.
